Give Carrick the No. of Keane, then Wait
Carrick was given the number of Manchester legend Roy Keane, 16, who already retired from the games. The number is directly a message telling all fans to expect a legend like future from the 25-year-old former Spur.
Do the club’s expectations a little too high?
But, did they pay more to justify the expectations?
Manchester United made the young player the fifth most expensive signing of the club at £14 million and probably £4.6 million more depending on club’s success this season. The details of
what constitutes success has not been reported but anything less than leadership on standings is considered a failure, I assume.
The fee paid is astronomical considering Spurs only paid 2.75 million pounds in August 2004, justification will only come years after he has developed into a mature and dependable player.
Manchester certainly bid for Carrick higher than any club offered not because of his current talents but because of the kind of growth the world has seen on this player, whom they expect to increase greatly when he plays for one of the best clubs in the world, far better than his former Spurs. As the club says: There is one price for us and one price for others, but there was a level we were prepared to go to and I think we paid two pence more than that.
The figure is about the price David Gill (chief executive at Manchester United) and I decided to go with at the beginning.
We have paid good money for a maturing player. At 25 a young player realises he has a bit of authority in the team.
Michael has plenty of years of experience in the Premiership and he has had good coaching at Tottenham and has now played in the World Cup.
The club and fans certainly want to see a fast return of investment, the club responded by associating him to Roy, a move which they have disputed right from the start saying it was not meant to add pressure to the kid. Ferguson says: People are saying he is a replacement for Roy, but you can’t get another Roy Keane. We have been trying for five years. Michael Carrick on the other hand has this to say: I know people will talk about pressure, but that will be nothing like the pressure I put on myself to play well.
I came to United to win things and play in the Champions League because I want to test myself against the best players in the world.
They know we know, it is.
In another news related to Michael’s future, Patrick Viera has agreed to move to Inter Milan. Two days ago, Manchester United was going after Patrick following his announcement that he does not want to stay at Juventus after they were relegated to Serie B.
As I said, he could have been the best mentor of Michael; nevertheless, the club is going to find someone to play alongside their prized acquisition.
